My journey has taken me across the North Island of New Zealand and I’ve experienced spectacular sights. This adventure is now past the halfway point in kilometers and soon will take me to the South Island. I’m hoping for much better weather down south but no matter what, I’ll definitely enjoy my journey.
I know the south will be much more remote so the luxury of towns every two or three days is coming to a close. I’m planning my mail drops and getting organized for the next part of this adventure!
I still marvel at the kindness of the people in New Zealand. I was hiking the Escarpment Track (also known as the Stairway to Heaven) yesterday and met a day tramper at the top. As we were talking I mentioned how much I was looking forward to the dairy at the other end of the trail (nothing motivates a long distance tramper more than the prospect of an ice cream). He didn’t even hesitate, reached in his pocket and handed me a $5 bill and told me to enjoy an ice cream on him.
This is truly a land of magic and generosity. I’m very lucky to have this experience.
