On one of my previous trips to New Zealand, I learned that the only native New Zealand flowers are either yellow or white. Should I see any other colors, I understand that they are not native and were, at some point, imported to this land.
Te Araroa takes trampers through towns and past suburban homes in many places and I’m always amazed at how many Kiwis keep their front gardens both remarkably trimmed and brimming with color!
The variety of flowers always bring a smile to my face. Seeing these gardens shows me the pride people take in their homes and in their environment.
This pride is evident in how they care for the lands I am tramping through as well. It is clear that the Kiwis are adopting the Maori belief that they are responsible to and should care for the land.
